Dear sisters, brothers, and friends in the Talitha Kum network,
Greetings of peace and hope from Thailand. It is with a heart full of gratitude that I share with you a small glimpse into our shared mission here, a mission to nurture and protect the most precious gift we have: our young people.
Here in Thailand, a land of vibrant culture and immense beauty, our youth also face the shadows of risk that seek to dim their bright futures. The dangers of human trafficking and exploitation are ever-present, preying on vulnerability. As part of our global Talitha Kum family, our focus here is firmly on prevention – on reaching our youth before they can be harmed, on building a wall of knowledge and self-worth around them.
Our work is centered on empowerment through education. We go into schools and local communities to run workshops and training sessions. We don't just speak to the children; we work closely with teachers and parents, creating a circle of awareness and protection.
A cornerstone of our work is the "Talitha Kum Youth and Talitha Kum Kids" program. We recognized a simple truth: we cannot stay with the children all the time, especially as they navigate the world of social media or when they live in remote areas that are difficult for us to reach. Therefore, the most powerful solution is to empower them to become leaders themselves. These young leaders, in their own villages and schools, become our partners. They create safe spaces where their peers can learn about their rights, build confidence, and support one another. They become the eyes and ears of their own community, equipped with the knowledge to identify risks and the courage to speak up.
Every time I go out to meet people whether in remote communities, or in schools with teachers, students, and parents I carry a deep hope with me. It is a hope that they will never become victims, and also a hope that they, in turn, will help to look after one another and protect their own communities.
Your prayers and solidarity give us strength. Every child we empower is a victory over exploitation. Please keep Thailand’s youth in your hearts as we work together for a world where every child grows up safe and with dignity.
In solidarity and hope,
Sr Marie Agnes Buasap, SPC
